Mr.Sethumadhavan came to this field by directing Jnanasundary In 1961. He had a taste of his own and always maintained this by choosing the themes with social importance. He succeeded in presenting his film in a very simple way so that the audience could easily understand the objective of his films. Most of his films including 'Odayil Ninnu' (written by Shri. P. Keshavdev (late), Aranazhika Neram, 'Anubhavangal Palichakal (Thoppil Bhasi)' where based on famous novels by Kerala's well-known writers.

It was also the golden era for Malayalam film songs (Writers, Musicians and Singers). The Vayalar - Devarajan team have given us numerous unforgettable melodies. Baburaj, Dakshinamurthy, and K. Rakhavan composed enchanting tunes for the lyrics by P. Bhaskaran, Yusuf Ali Kechery, Sreekumaran Thampi, Kavalam Narayan Panicker, O.N.V. Kurup and others. Ever famous Yesudas, S. Janaki, P Leela, P Susheela, Jayachandran, Kamukara Purushothaman, A.M. Raja etc.. are the gifts of that era.

Mr. Ramu Kariattu brought us the first national level recognition by bagging the Gold medal for his film Chemmeen in 1966. Rural Kerala were the locations for all his films. The film 'Chemmeen' based on a novel by Thakazhi Shivasankara Pillai's (Jnapeetam Award winner) famous novel of same name. Sathyan , Kottarakkara, Sheela, Madhu, S.P. Pillai Adoor Bhavani and many other top class stars acted in this film. The music scored by Salil choudhary. Mr. Kariattu introduced Madhu to Malayalam cinema through his film 'Moodupadam'

Sixties and seventies had given us eminent directors like Vincent, P.N. Menon(late), Thoppil Bhasi(late), M. Krishnan Nair, Kunchako(late), P.A. Thomas, Aravindan(late), and Adoor Gopalakrishnan etc…

These people were responsible for making outstanding films like 'Kanchana Seetha', 'Thambu', 'Elippathayam', 'Vasthuhara', 'Mathilukal', 'Piravi', 'Swam', Swayam Varam, Nirmaliyam, Mooladhanam, and Ashwamedham etc…

The new generation directors like Shaji Kailas, shaji N Karun, Lohithadas, Bharathan (late),Padmarajan(late), Bhadharan, Balachandra Menon, Priya Darshan Sathyan, Kamal, Shyama Prasad, Sibi Malayil, are not behind to anybody who have claimed national and international awards for their films.

The latest achievement is Shaji N Karun's "VANAPRASTHAM" with Mohanlal in the lead.

During the year 2002 and 2003 Malayalam Cinema produced some very good films like, Nammal, Kunjhi Koonan, CID Moosa, Nandanam, Balettan, Yathrakarude Sradhakku, Velli Nakshathram, 4 the People etc... are among them.

Eventhough there was some dispute between various organizations of Malayalam film industry during 2004, some good films were released and was very successful at box-office. Year 2004 witnessed the death of some well known supporting stars as well as others from the film industry
